Spread of light arms in Nigeria worry stakeholders

Emeka Ibemere reports the scary arms buildup in Nigeria as 2015 draws near
The boom, gloom and doom of light arms in Nigeria, seems to have provided the much needed fears for the coming election as the general elections scheduled to begin on February 14, 2015, draws near.
Unknown to many Nigerians, arms and light guns, including dangerous weapons are being stockpiled by politicians, merchants of war, contractors of arms and weapons in readiness for the election.
Not done, the activities of the ethnic militia men in Nigeria are also fueling the hopelessness many Nigerians have expressed concerning the election.
This has made guns of different shapes and sizes to be in the hands of our restive- rebellious youths in different garb of militia formations as: Boko Haram, Odu People’s Congress (OPC), Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), the Niger-Delta militants and Ombatse cult, despite the war against terrorism in Nigeria.
Security experts and stakeholders are worried by the spate of discoveries of these weapons and how they are entering into Nigeria, as if the country is preparing for war.
The news reports on weapons, arms and ammunition being unearthed in the country, including the ones not discovered almost in all the six-geo political regions of, gives great concern.
Recently, security was beefed up in the Kano metropolis after the Nigerian military, stationed at the Aminu Kano International Airport, seized a Russian-registered airplane heading for neighbouring Chad Republic, loaded with huge quantities of arms, ammunition and explosives.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that security was tightened in the city because the cargo in the plane was suspected, and officials needed time to properly grill the pilot and other crew members in the aircraft.
In June last year, a similar cargo plane with arms was equally detained at the Kano airport, but was later cleared and allowed to proceed to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It was gathered that the latest aircraft, which was detained at the airport, made a stopover in Kano to refuel, but security officials at the airport became suspicious when the pilot refused polite requests to declare the contents of the plane.
The aircraft, which was allegedly heading for N’djamena, the capital of Chad, apparently landed in Kano at about 2a.m – an odd hour in Nigeria – to refuel, and when the pilot refused to cooperate, he was detained along with other crew members in the aircraft.
It would be recalled that Just recently, a close associate of the Chadian President, Alhaje Idriss Déby, was arrested by INTERPOL for providing weapons for Boko Haram.
The man, Mahamat Bichara Gnoti, was allegedly arrested on the Chadian-Sudan border with nineteen modern SAM2 missiles, which he purchased for the terrorist group from the Sudanese Army and was to sell them to the insurgents in Nigeria.

Mahamat Gnoti had claimed that President Idriss Déby gave him the “money to purchase the weapons,” and he repeatedly waved a presidential pass issued to him by the president’s office to pass through border guards.
He was, however, stopped and searched by the guards who found the deadly weapons in his car, and this has prompted an investigation by the Nigerian security to determine whether the arrest could confirm suspicions that Chad had been the main support base for the Boko Haram insurgency.

Although the Chadian President, Alhaje Idriss Déby, has repeatedly denied providing any official support for Boko Haram, it was lately discovered that the group gets a higher portion of its support, and also conducts open recruitment of fighters in the Chad Republic.
The aircraft, with registration number AN 124-100-RAH 2038, was detained at the Kano airport, for proper investigation.
Security experts and stakeholders are worried with the proliferation of arms in Nigeria.  A high placed serving police officer, who declined to be named, said his observation as regards to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria in general dates back to the Niger-Delta with particular reference to the militant groups as mostly responsible for the spread of small arms and light weapons in the Niger Delta, and Nigeria. According to him, most of the weapons are supplied by foreign arms dealers adding that these weapons are used by criminal groups to commit illegal acts, rig election and carry out ethnic agenda. He said to solve the problem of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the Niger Delta, both state and Federal governments have to continue to check the activities of the militants in the region. He also, called for strict border policy at the nation’s borders, especially areas where the country shares borders with Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Togo, Benin Republic and others.
Earlier now, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, the former Lagos State Commissioner of Police had in a telephone interview, told Newswatch Times that the dealers are exploiting the porous of the border and the connivance of some politicians and their agents to allow some arms to enter Nigeria. According to him, politicians in 2007, who wanted power by all means used imported arms into the country and hired it out to their thugs to help them win election at all cost, so that they would continue their corruption run on the soul of the country.
“This is a creation of politicians and it started quite long ago, that is why there is total insecurity throughout the country, politicians use the arms and thugs to win election at all cost to continue with corruption”, Tsav stated.
“The situation is even worse now that President Goodluck Jonathan is in power because he is empowering his Niger-Delta Militants to acquire arms and silence who ever oppose him in 2015.”
According to Tsav, the huge weapon cache seized in Kano must have the connivance of some security agencies.
“How did such deadly weapons get into Nigeria? Is it due to our porous borders, corruption, and ineffectiveness of the law enforcement agencies or connivance to destabilize our country”? Tsav queried.
Though, the no-nonsense ex-cop salutes the courage and intelligence of the security agents who uncovered the arms cache in Kano State but tasked them to take a discreet investigation to unearth more culprits in other areas of the country.
“I congratulate security agencies for this wonderful job and urge them to conduct discreet investigation which should cover the whole country”. He said.
Tsav is of the opinion too; that it’s high time those supplying arms to the Military and Para-Military organizations in the country such as the Army (NA), Police, Nigerian Navy (NN), Nigeria Customs Services, (NCS), Nigeria Air force (NA) Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), State Security Service (SSS) and other sundry Para-Military organizations to be investigated for the spate of arms infiltration into the country.
“The scope of the investigation should not be restricted to Hezbollah and Boko Haram but also to all Arms contractors for the military and Para-military establishments, including Niger-Delta Militants based on the Asari-Dokubo threats”, Tsav added.
Tsav disclosed that all the nation’s senior military personnel and their colleagues in the Para-military are friends to some of the Lebanese arms contractors. The former Police chief said he is worried that Nigeria’s major arms contractors were the shrewd Iran and Lebanese businessmen.
According to him, they have operated in this country as though they are above the law. “All senior military and Para-military officers are their friends. It’s being alleged that they dominate contract for supply of armament and weapons. They could use defense contracts to smuggle in such weapons. This needs to be investigated”.
Eastern Union, EU, a social political cum cultural association, based in Abuja, while speaking through its leader, Charles Anike, condemned the spread of small guns and weapons in Nigeria. According to the organization, everything is boiled down to the 2015 election, because the election is drawing very close. He said amidst serious insecurity resulting from the Boko Haram insurgence, that the diehard politicians are also not helping matters.
They observed that most of the political leaders are not mincing words in their attempt to clinch power by all means. Anike stated that at every for a, that desperate politicians are declaring their uncompromising stands about 2015.
“There have been several reports of arms importation by the politicians. All the political without exceptions are really preparing for war. Both of them are reportedly stockpiling weapons, meaning that whatever they can’t get through the ballot box, they would get through barrel of the gun and violence”, Anike observed.
“This fear has sent many Nigerians relocating to their native homelands. Exactly what we experienced in 1993, the Eastern Union is for this reason proposing national youth rally for peaceful election to hold at Abuja on 15 January, 2015, where the youths will converge to agree and reject to be instrumental for election violence”.
“We therefore call on the President Goodluck Jonathan, the leaders of all the political parties, government agencies, corporate bodies, professionals, social workers and lovers of peace in and outside Nigeria to support and make the national youth rally a success, as we cannot afford to risk or waste more lives of our people”, Anike pleaded.
It was gathered that one of the ways to check the proliferation of illegal weapons been used by the Boko Haram sects and other criminals in the country was for the Nigerian Immigration and Customs service to be proactive in their surveillance and checks. Survey on the Seme-Badagry, by our correspondent, shows that the Nigeria-Benin Republic border at Seme has over 30 illegal routes, known to some Customs and Immigration officers.
An impeccable source told Newswatch Times that such routes serve as ‘viable illegal toll gates’ for the security officers to rake dubious money at the security expense of the country’s security, unity and co-existence. Checks revealed also that most of the arms ferried into the country come through waterways.
On 28 May 2013 a combined team of the JTF involving the NA of the 3 Brigade in Kano and the Kano state DSS conducted a thorough search of a house located at No 3 Gaya Road off Bompai Road Kano belonging to one Abdul Hassan Taher Fadlalla, a Lebanese national who as of then was out of the country. The report added that after a painstaking search of the whole premises, the search team uncovered an underground bunker in the master’s Bedroom where large quantities of assorted weapons of different types were buried. The bunker was especially allegedly constructed for this purpose.

The investigation also confirms the existence of a Hezbollah Foreign Terrorist Cell in Nigeria. Consequently, the DSS on 16 May 2013 arrested one Mustapha Fawaz, the co-owner of the popular Amigo Supermarket as well as the wonderland Amusement Park all in Abuja. Thus, his arrest and confession unveiled other members of the foreign terrorists’ network which led to the interception of one member of the syndicate named Abdullah Tahini, a Lebanese national at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with undeclared amount of sixty thousand United States Dollars on him en-route Beirut. Thereafter on 26 May 2013 one Talal Roda, also a Lebanese with Nigerian Passport was arrested in this same house.
Security experts alluded the fact that even though they are found guilty; that Hezbollah terrorists have found home in Nigeria. The truth is that despite the thousands of miles that separate Nigeria from Lebanon, the country is faced with a growing threat from a Hezbollah arms importation in Nigeria.
Thursday 29, November 2012, JTF raided Kwanar Shahada, Jushin Ciki, Zaria, Kaduna, where a bomb making factory was uncovered.
The joint security team also arrested a sixty-year-old man, Umaru Mohammed within the raided premises and recovered Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs at stage one state of readiness to be used for bomb attack.
Investigation revealed that the arms have been entering into the country unnoticed since 2007, such that the importations were coming into the country through seaports, airports, and various borders.
It started with the British-based arms dealer, identified as Gary Hyde who then was going trial in London, for allegedly helping an organized shipment of thousands of guns from China to Nigeria in 2007, without the necessary license.
In November 2010, an arm shipment en-route Gambia from its destination in Iran was seized in Nigeria making analysts to begin to ask the question: why must Nigeria always serve as a route to ferry those illegal arms and ammunition?
The same year, Nigeria Police Force in Kano State also impounded a large consignment of military uniform shipped into the country through the Nigeria/Niger Republic border of Kastina State. The Military uniform was seized from a warehouse, close to the Kano Pillars Stadium in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State, and it was alleged to have been smuggled into the country. The police confirmed the arrest of some suspects in connection with the uniform, pointing out that the police are interrogating them. It was gathered that the arrested suspects presented some documents indicating that the Ministry of Defence authorized the consignments.
Also, recall that the Kano/Jigawa command of Nigerian Customs Services also impounded large quantities of military uniform, comprising of Air force uniform and army camouflage. Customs’ agents at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) apprehended two suspects identified as Magaji Mohammed and Mohammed Auwal.  The Customs Area Comptroller, Kano/Jigawa Command later transferred the impounded uniform and the suspects to the state police command.  High security source in Abuja accused some security agencies of playing ostrich most times to allow dangerous weapons into Nigeria. Daily Newswatch gathered that some customs officials after collecting alleged gratification served as escorts to the passage of such shipment to make sure that the preying eyes of some security officials didn’t see them.
Findings also show that such illegal shipments are met to pass through the border at a time officials that would stop such practice are not on duty making it a leeway for business in illicit arms deal to triumph. Illegal arm shipment has continued to be a source of huge challenge to security men who are in doubt as to where and how some of these arms found their way into the country.  It is embarrassing developments the rate at which militia groups, miscreants, Boko Haram sects and recently Hezbollah has access to lethal weapons of mass destruction to perpetrate their threats.
Ubochi John, a staff of a private security organization with a new generation bank on Island area of Lagos, said the arms entering into the country points to the ominous sign of the nation’s crash in 2015 as predicted by American scholars.
Anike, EU leader stated that Nigerian political class are not helping matters y the way they go about indulging in arms importation to equip their thugs for serious opposition against the party at the centre.  “Political thugs armed with the weapons created phony groups and militia gangs and backed by their influential and wealthy political godfathers launched an unprecedented attack on innocent citizens just to make the government ‘ungovernable,” he stated.
According to some security analysts, the situation is frightening. The arms proliferation will not do us right as a nation but serve the interest of those who want Nigeria disintegrate. “There have been so many predications that Nigeria entity would collapse in 2015 and since after the predictions, it has been one problem to another”.

Troubled festival: Community, Chief sues Delta State police

Emeka Ibemere
The just concluded Inne festivals which was held on Tuesday 21st of October 2014, without any single record of violence or break down of law and order in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State is generating another form of crises, two months after the traditional festival.
This is because the custodians of the tradition are been queried for celebrating their annual new yam festival by the police high command in the state.
Against all odds, last year’s new yam festival of the people of Ogwashi-Uku, in Idemili Local Government Area, of Aniocha-South Delta State, a prominent son and a community leader of Agidiase and Agidiehe, celebrated the Inne festival of the community.
The new yam festival, also known as ancient Inne festival takes place at the palace of Agidiehe quarters, every October 21, 2014.
It would be recalled that last year’s event generated a lot of bad blood over the actual date of the festival.
The altercation followed amidst who, when and where to celebrate the high reverend event among the two communities of Ogwashi Uku Kingdom.
It was gathered that following the protracted Obiship squabble among the people of Ogwashi-Uku, the Inne festival became controversial as to who to preside over the event.
Two  years ago, about five people were allegedly killed in crises over the Obiship in Ogwashi-Uku kingdom between the families Obi Felix Ogochukwuka 11 of Deiyi royal family of Agidiehe quarters and Umu obi Obahai royal family.
Despite the Appeal Court ruling in Benin City on the legal tussle over the Obiship of Ogwashi Uku kingdom headquarters of Aniocha-South Local Government Area of Delta State, the communities are yet to have peace.
It would be recalled also that the court had declared the Umu obi Obahai royal family as the only family qualified to produce obi of Ogwashi Uku.
The court ruling said Professor Chukwuka Okonjo is the authentic Obi of Ogwashi Uku after the High Court in Delta State removed from the throne, Obi Felix Ogochukwuka 11 of Deiyi royal family in 2007.
But the judgement didn’t go down well with the people of Ogwashi-Uku even though the case was said to be at the Supreme Court.
However, last year’s festival of the famous Inne festival attracted altercation between both families as some kingmakers in the community deferred on whom to preside over the Inne festival?
This year, the tussle between the two families led to the observation of the festival of Inne separately between both families and some kingmakers in the community. While Umu obi Obahai royal family celebrated their own separately, the families of Obi Felix Ogochukwuka 11 of Deiyi royal family of Agidiehe quarters observed theirs’ differently.
However, last year’s festival of the famous Inne festival was finally held on Tuesday 21, October 2014 and it has turned out to be a legal tussle between the Delta State Police Command and the adherents of the festival.
A traditional chief, a king-maker and community leader, HH Nwajei Chuks Nwajei, Agumba and Akaji obi of Ogwashi-Uku, was quizzed by the police few days after celebrating the annual Inne festival- the community’s new yam festival of the people of Ogwashi-Uku by the Asaba State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, on interrogation but after the exercise, he was allegedly detained on the orders of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Noah Adesoyin on charges of claiming to be the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and adorning the traditional regalia of Obi.
The event later went sour for the Assistant Commissioner, when on the second day he allegedly developed stroke at his detention cell and couldn’t walk again.
The oddity forced the police to rush him to the Federal Medical Centre Asaba, Delta State Capital, where he was detained on his hospital bed under the surveillance of a junior police officer and for five days, he was sick and hapless without any visit by the senior police officer who ordered his arrest and detention.
For apparently arresting and detaining a traditional Chief for five days without trial, the community and one of their chiefs’ dragged the police boss to the Federal High Court of Justice in the Asaba Judicial Division; for detaining a traditional Chief on allegation of celebrating the traditional new yam festival, the popular Inne festival and adorning Obi regalia.
Others listed in the suit are the Police Service Commission, Abuja, Inspector General of Police, Abuja and the Delta State Commissioner of Police. Others are Mr Lawrence Okolobi from Ogwashi Uku and Collins Afuwah also from Ogwashi Uku.
Mr Adesoyin, head of the SCIED and Assistant Commissioner of police’s problem started when he ordered his officers to affect the arrest of Agumba and Akaji obi of Ogwashi-Uku and detained him for five days without charging him to court for his offences.
However, on November 11, 2014, Nwajei said he mandated his lawyers to proceed to court for breach of his fundamental human rights by the Assistant Commissioner of police and claiming damages to the tune of N50million.
In a law suit No FHC/ASABA/C5/60/2014, made available to Daily Signpost, Nwajei’s lawyer Andy N Onyejose, Esq is asking the court to restraining the respondents from re-arresting the applicant and further restraining the other respondents, their agents or servants from presenting themselves as complainants on behalf of the Obi-In-Counsel by employing the services of the 4th respondent against the applicant, pending the determination of the substantive suit before the honourable court.
Daily signpost gathered that there was another case against the respondents 5th and 6th on the case before now.
“A declaration that the arrest and detention of the applicant by the 4th respondent on the 22nd and 27th October, 2014 at the instance of the 5th and 6th respondents was unlawful, unconstitutional and contravened his rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement, dignity of human person as protected and guaranteed by sections 34, 35 and 41 of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended”, the lawyer stated in his law suit.
The lawyer also stated that the denial by the Assistant Commissioner of police to allow Nwajei to receive medical treatment while in the police cell was unlawful, unconstitutional and contravened his rights to live as protected and guaranteed by sections 34, 35 and 41 of the Nigerian constitution.
The lawyer further asked the court to stop further disturbing, molesting, harassing, arresting and detaining Nwajei for performing his annual Igba Inneh festival without compliance with the due process of the law and order and that Nwajei as a free citizen, who has not committed any criminal offence or found guilty of any offence by court of competent jurisdiction is entitled to enjoy his fundamental rights. He also stated that the Nwajei being a traditional Chief in Ogwashi-Uku is entitled to perform his annual Igba Inneh.
He said the damages Nwajei was claiming in the sum of N50, 000.000.00, only was a claim jointly and severally against Adesoyin, Okolobi and Afuwah, for being the cost of injury suffered by Nwajei due to his arrest and incarceration in harmful fumigated police cell at the instance of the Delta State Assistant Commissioner of police, which caused the paralyzing of Nwajei and financial losses he incurred due to his admission from harmful fumigated police cell to federal Medical Cen
tre’s Emergency Ward, Asaba for six days without any justifiable reasons for his arrest and detention by the officer.
“By virtue of section 35 of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to his/her personal liberty and shall not be deprived of such liberty except for cases spelt out in paragraph (a) (e), of the subsection,” the law suit read.
In support of the motion to sue the police officer, Nwajei in an oath affidavit made available to our Correspondent stated that it was customary that under the native law and custom of Ogwashi Uku, every Chief in Ogwashi-Uku is entitled and expected to perform annual festival called Igba Inneh.
“I have been performing my annual Igba Inneh festival since I was conferred a chief in Ogwashi-Uku, since 2001 without any break down of law, harassment or molestation”, Nwajei added.
“That I performed my annual Igba Inne on Tuesday 21st day of October 2014, without any single record of violence or break down of law and order in Ogwashi-Uku”.
According to Nwajei, on Wednesday 22 October, 2014 at about 6.47am, a team of armed police officers men and women from the police command, Asaba and Ogwashi Uku Division stormed into his residence to arrest him. He stated that on getting to Asaba Police State Headquarters, he was taken straight to the office of Mr. Noah Adesoyin, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, and the State Criminal Investigation Department about 8.15 for interrogation.
“In the office of Mr Noah Adesoyin, I met Messers Lawrence Okolobi and Collins Afuwah waiting for my arrival for the arrest. That immediate, the IPO informed the 4th Respondent that I have been arrested and immediately the 4th Respondent started using invective words on me without letting me know my offence. Thereafter, the 4th Respondent ordered that I should be detained and I was accordingly detained”, he explained.
According to Nwajei, his traducers misinformed the police that he forged Mr Collins Afuwah’s signature on Power of Attorney but that he was able to rebut the allegation before the police officer Moreso, that he had no reason to forge anybody’s signature to sell his own land on James Nwajei’s land.
“I was kept in the Cell, the 4th Respondent advised 5th and 6th Respondents to go for another allegation against me. That inside, the Cell was fumigated with chemical before my arrival and I complained to the IPO, that the Cell is offensive to my health but I was ignored”, he stated in his sworn affidavit.
“That it was after I have been detained for hours that the IPO, brought me out to make statement on the forgery which I debunked the allegation to include that the matter is in High Court of Justice, Ogwashi Uku with the petitioner”.
He said that it was based on the advice of the 4th Respondent to the 5th and 6th respondents respectively, to go and get more allegations against him that that they brought allegation that while he was performing his annual Igba Inneh festival that he dressed like the King of Ogwashi Uku, the Obi.
“That the next day been 23rd day of October, 2014 when the IPO came to the Cell to arraign me in court that I informed him that I could no longer stand or walk with my two legs that I need immediate medical attention but I was denied immediate medical attention until later in the day when the situation has worsen that I was taken to Federal Medical Centre Asaba and I was admitted in their emergency ward immediately”, Nwajei swore.

Nigerians declare 2014 as the “year of Boko Haram”

Emeka Ibemere
Despite the huge budgetary allocation mapped out this ending year to fight insurgency and other forms of insecurity in the country, the ending 2014, would go down in history as the worse year for Nigerian government and her citizens in terms of security.
Security operations received the lion's share of the 2014 budget, based on estimates submitted by the Federal Government.
2014 budget was the third consecutive year security budget tops the highest allocation.
In 2013, Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala submitted the N4.91 trillion appropriation bill to the two chambers of the National Assembly in Abuja.
Out of the total budgeted sum, about N1.1 trillion, representing 27 percent, is for capital expenditure, while N2.43 trillion was to go for recurrent spending.
The remaining amounts are for debt service, N712 billion; statutory transfers, N399.7 billion; and Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), N268 billion. Government's expected revenue target was put at N3.73 trillion, while the budget deficit stands at 1.9 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), slightly up from that of the 2013 budget, which stood at 1.85 per cent.
A total of N845 billion was provided for recurrent and service-wide votes for the security sector, which includes the Armed Forces, Police, National Security Adviser's office, and the Para-military services. If the capital vote is put at 27 per cent of the total for the security sector, then the security vote could hit about N1 trillion. This is about the same as the amounts received by the sector in two previous budgets of 2012 and 2013.
However, based on the estimates submitted by the Finance Minister, recurrent allocation for Defence (including Army, Air Force and Navy), is N306 billion; police formation and commands, N286 billion; office of the National Security Adviser, N67 billion; Interior Ministry, N145 billion; and Police Affairs Ministry, N4.5 billion. Also part of the security spending are provisions under 'service-wide votes' for Nigerian Army Quick Response Group and arrears, N12 billion; and Operations-Internal for the Armed Forces, N24 billion.
Inspite of this lion share of the budget, the nation suffered huge security lapses in 2014 which saw Nigerians taking their heels to neighbouring countries while men and women were taken hostage in their own country without any trace of their whereabouts. Also, it was the year towns were literarily ‘colonized’ by Boko Haram.
Former Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Oshodi Isolo Local government and a pastor, Simple Celestine Nwosu told our Correspondent that it was a year of insecurity managed by Boko Haram insurgents. According to him, there was no security throughout the country. It was God who saved Nigerians.
“At a point, I thought we are facing another war, so there was no security at all,” Nwosu quipped.
Speaking through the phone, former Lagos State Commissioner of police stated that security in 2014 was very poor and was compounded by President Jonathan’s insensitivity to security matters. In fact, Nigeria has never had it so badly. Asari Dokubo threatens the whole nation and nothing happens to him because Jonathan’s support”, Tsav explained.
For Raphael Mbaegbu Program Officer - Research and Strategy Development of CLEEN Foundation, 2014 security was worse than ever, adding that insecurity reigned unabated. Anike Charles, President of Easter Union, based in Abuja told our reporter that the year 2014, seemed to be the worst of all the years for Nigeria in terms of internal security. “The Boko Haram terrorist activities got to its peak in 2014, w2ith series of bombing and kidnapping of school girls and women in the North East”, Anike added.
“People were killed in hundreds and thousands unchecked. In some other part of the country, kidnapping is still a thriving business. Today, Dr. Oguntuese of Akure was slained and his home was set ablaze and so many communal wars in some states”.
Anike described the security situation in Nigeria in 2014, as in hopeless situation. According to him, the security operatives seem to be in total disarray. “The constant reports of sabotage within the military are a big case. The Cameroonian soldiers have been doing great job in the war against insurgence while the Nigerian forces are in taters and rags due to sentiments, which was not part of the military. The Nigeria security need serious and total overhauling, if we must succeed next year”, he concluded.
According to EU’s leader, in other climes, He said most of them want to continue to maintain relevance.
Anike said in the other countries, security is a serious issue that every well meaning citizens show concern and commitment, irrespective of their political or religious groupings but that the opposition seeks every opportunity to pull down those in power, not minding whose blood is shared.
“They keep issuing threats and making unwarranted and unguarded comments, which always increase tension. They also sponsor self centred protest and rallies. When America was attacked in 2011, the opposition didn’t rain abuses or blames on their President Bush”, he stated further.
“All hands were on deck to safe America from terrorists but in Nigeria, the opposition wants to be in power before they could join forces to safe Nigeria from terrorists. The unguarded statements of some respected senior citizens of Nigeria are another form of threat to security”.
Nnamdi Cos -Ukwuoma, a Public Analyst, writer and social commentator, based in Owerri, Imo State capital stated, explained that there were improvements in various sectors which were very noticeable in Nigeria, especially in the area of security.
According to him, security improved noticeably this year despite the activities of Boko Haram insurgency which seems to be one of the evil machinations of those desperate for power and vendetta. He said, “To say that certain persons have the key to fixing the Boko Haram problem is worrisome and a slap on our collective psyche as a people”, he added.
“Certainly, the problem of Boko Haram can be taken care of when the leaders of the North openly condemned and take decisive steps against it. Most agitating is the fact that Nigerians expected quick fix over this menace, not realising that the problem was created over time. I’m confident the situation is redeemable. We shall get there, to the glory of God”.
It would be recalled that in April 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped 276 female students from Chibok, Borno. More than 50 of them soon escaped, but the remainder have not been released. Instead, Shekau, who has a reward of $7 million offered by the US DOS since June 2013, for information leading to his capture, announced his intention of selling them into slavery.
Between May and July 2014, 8,000 Nigerian refugees arrived in the country, up to 25% suffering from acute malnutrition. Cameroon, which ranked 150 out of 186 on the 2012 UNDP HDI, currently (August 2014) hosts 107,000 refugees fleeing unrest in the CAR, expected to increase to 180,000 by the end of the year. A further 11,000 Nigerian refugees crossed the border into Cameroon and Chad during August.
Beginning in August 2014, they changed their tactics, instead occupying swathes of territory in northeast Nigeria from which the increasingly beleaguered Nigerian military were unable or unwilling to expel them
Suicide bomber dressed as a student killed at least 48, most of them students, and injured 79 others at a school assembly in the northern-eastern Nigerian town of Potiskum, hospital official says
The goons attack Gwoza as the group continued to capture territory in north-east and eastern areas of Borno, as well as in Adamawa and Yobe States. Attacks across the border were repelled by the Cameroon military. The territorial gains were officially denied by the Nigerian military.
The town of Bama, 45 miles from the state capital Maiduguri, was reported to have been captured at the beginning of September, resulting in thousands of residents fleeing to Maiduguri, even as residents there were themselves attempting to flee.
The militants were reportedly killing men and teenage boys in the town of over 250,000 inhabitants. Soldiers refused orders to advance on the occupied town, and hundreds of deserters fled across the border into Cameroon.
On 17 October, the Chief of the Defence Staff announced that a ceasefire had been brokered, stating "I have accordingly directed the service chiefs to ensure immediate compliance with this development in the field."
On 29 October Mubi, a town of 200,000 in Adamawa, fell to the militants, further undermining confidence in the peace talks. Thousands fled south to Adamawa's capital city, Yola. Amid media speculation that the ceasefire announcement had been part of President Jonathan's re-election campaign. Mubi was said to have been recaptured by the army on 13 November. On the same day, Boko Haram seized Chibok; two days later, the army recaptured the largely deserted town. As of 16 November it was estimated that more than twenty towns and villages had been taken control of by the militants. EFCC Arraigns Two For Attempting To Swindle Gen. Ogbeha

EFCC Press Release

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 arraigned the duo of Abiodun Akorede (aka Kwesi John Mensah) and Sherif Olaseni Ajaga (aka Rowland Komolafe) before Justice H.U. Baba of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja for  criminal conspiracy and attempt to obtain money under false pretences.
The accused persons who pleaded not guilty to the 2-count charge were arrested by operatives of the Commission following a petition by Senator Tunde Ogbeha, alleging attempt to swindle him in a non- existent transaction.
The retired army general allegedly received a telephone call on December 5, 2014 from one Morris Williams who claimed to be a staff of World Wide Organisation.
Williams was said to have told the petitioner that his company was ready to award him (the complainant) the sum of £10,000,000 (Ten Million Pound) for his consignment that was mishandled by an unnamed courier company.
Williams was also said to have told the complainant that one Mr Kwesi John Mensah and a certain Mr. Rowland Komolafe would meet him in Nigeria to deliver the money.
There was however a caveat. He would pay the clearing /service fee of about £11,000 (Eleven Thousand Pound).
Aware that he was not expecting any consignment, the petitioner told the accused persons that his driver would pick them on arrival in Nigeria to his office in Abuja for further discussion.
It was during the meeting in his office that the accused persons were handed over to the EFCC.
One of the charges read: “That you Abiodun Akorede, aka Kwesi John Mensah, Sherif Olaseni Ajaga, aka Rowland Komolafe and other still at large on or about December 5, 2014 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud one General Tunde Ogbeha did attempt to obtain the sum of  £11,000 (Eleven Thousand Pound) only under the pretence that the said sum was meant for clearing charges for a non-existing transaction, which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 8(b) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other,  Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1(3) of the same Act.”
Justice Baba ordered that the suspects be remanded in Kuje Prison and adjourned the case to January 20, 2015.

14 drug barons to celebrate new year in NDLEA net

No fewer than 14 suspected drug barons have been caged in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA's,

net with over N300million worth of various types of illicit drugs.

The suspects were apprehended at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, (MMIA), Lagos with 33.655kg of narcotic drugs.

Also discovered by the narcotics agents were their various methods of drug concealment adopted by drug traffickers to escape arrest this end of year season but were not lucky as their ploy failed them.
Daily Signpost gathered that eight of the suspects were caught trying to smuggle cocaine into the country from Brazil and Argentina, while six others were intercepted while taking drugs to Hong Kong, Dubai, Italy and Brazil.
According to the NDLEA commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar,
“four of the suspects were apprehended in one flight, Royal Air Marco on their way from Brazil. Some of the seized drugs were dissolved in water and absorbed in two towels and a T-shirt. Others were industrially packed in tin foods, body cream packs while some of the suspects ingested the drugs in total disregard of the health implications. The estimated value of the seized drugs is about three hundred million naira (N300,000,000)”, Umar stated
"The names of the suspects are as follows; Okafor Chijioke Franklin 25 years old caught with 13.735kg cocaine in tin food, Okeke Uchenna Aloy Pascal 29 year old caught with 3.425kg cocaine absorbed in towels, Akpobome Godwin Ujunwa 32 years old found with 1.730kg of cocaine absorbed in T-shirt, Ani Monday, 37 years old found with 300 grammes of cocaine, Madububa Amaechi Joseph, 38 years old ingested 845 grammes of cocaine, Amuka Sunday, 26 years old ingested 1.505kg cocaine and Ijoganu Edache, 25 year old ingested 1.240kg of cocaine".

Also to end the year in NDLEA net include  Obiefuna Tochukwu Kenneth, 40 years old found with 500 grammes of cocaine, Ogbodu Williams, 48 years caught with 1.650kg of cocaine, Nwakama Walter Chinonso, 32 years old caught with 1.060kg of cocaine, Egbueme Benedict McCarthy, 31 years old found with 1.190kg of cocaine, Nwachukwu Chimeremeze Leonard, 38 years old found with 975 grammes of heroin/cocaine, Adebayo Wasiu Abiodun, 30 years old caught with 5kg of cannabis and Ofoegbu Godwin Ujunwa caught with 505 grammes of cocaine.

Investigation revealed that most of the suspects engaged in drug trafficking to get money for the end of year celebrations. Akpobome Godwin Greg was promised the sum of N2million to smuggle 1.730kg of cocaine absorbed in a T-shirt from Argentina to Nigeria. Okafor Chijioke Franklin was promised the sum of ten thousand dollars while Nwakama Walter Chinonso would have been paid the sum of five thousand dollars if he had not been caught.
Twenty-five years old Okafor Chijioke Franklin had the largest quantity of drugs. He was found in possession of 13.735kg cocaine concealed inside tin foods on his way from Brazil. According to Okafor,
“I have no one to help me. I traveled to Brazil a year ago in search of job opportunities. I used to hawk toys in Brazil to sustain myself. A friend promised to pay for my ticket to Nigeria to spend the end of year festive season. He was the person that gave me the drugs packed inside tin foods”.
For Egbueme Benedict McCarthy, who was going to Hong Kong where drug trafficking attracts capital punishment said his arrest was a divine intervention to save his life. Hear him:
“I used to sell used amplifiers in Abuja. I ingested 55 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.190kg. It was my classmate in the secondary school who now lives in Tanzania that sent the drugs to me and assisted me with my travel documents and expenses. I had no idea of the punishment for drug traffickers in Hong Kong until after my arrest. God has rescued me from death and I will never smuggle drugs again in my life,” Egbueme stated.
Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade described the arrests and seizures as a good way to end the year.

“this is a good way to end the year. The Agency shall continue to detect hidden drugs and prosecute offenders in line with the NDLEA Act”.
Giade added that the Agency shall also intensify its public awareness programmes to educate the public on the dangers of drug trafficking; stressing that the suspects arrested with drugs on their way to Hong Kong would have paid the ultimate price if not for the intervention of the Agency.
"The suspects would be charged to court soon," Mitchell Ofoyeju told Daily Signpost
