HOW 3 DRUG SUSPECTS INGESTED 233 WRAPS OF COCAINE

Three suspected drug traffickers are being interrogated for swallowing two hundred and thirty-three (233) wraps of powdery substances that tested positive for cocaine with a weight of 5.05kg. The suspects were apprehended during outward screening of passengers by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA). Two of the suspects, Obiekwe Frank Chuma and Okoye Jacob Okwuchukwu were going to Hong Kong while Chukwunyere Prince Emmanuel was caught on his way to Italy.

NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Mr. Hamza Umar gave a breakdown of the seized drugs. “Obiekwe Frank Chuma, 47 year old who ingested 80 wraps weighing 1.930kg during screening of Emirates passengers; Okoye Jacob Okwuchukwu, 43 year old was found to have ingested 70 wraps weighing 1.515kg during screening of passengers on an Etihad flight while Chukwunyere Prince Emmanuel, 39 year old ingested 83 wraps weighing 1.605kg. Prince was going to Bologna in Italy through Frankfurt on Lufthansa. They have voluntarily recorded their statements and our investigators are working on their cases” Hamza stated.

Obiekwe Frank Chuma said that he used to be a textile merchant before he suffered financial setback. “I lost my father when I was at Merchant of Light Secondary School between 1983 and 1988. I was given admission at Edo State University but dropped out in 300 levels due to lack of sponsorship. In 1997, I came to Lagos and started textile business. Later I began to buy my goods from Czech Republic and Hong Kong before my business suffered serious setback. In the process of looking for assistance, I was introduced into drug trafficking.  I was given the drug in a restaurant at Onitsha and they promised to pay me 10,000 dollars. It took me eight hours to swallow the drugs but was arrested at the airport” Obiekwe stated. He hails from Anambra State.

Okoye Jacobs Okuchukwu said that he met his sponsor at a wedding ceremony. “I have a Diploma in Computer Science at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Enugu. I used to import textiles from Dubai and Hong Kong. My business was flourishing and I have travelled to Hong Kong over 15 times. I later had problem that took my capital and I was stranded. That was what led me into drug trafficking. I was forced to swallow drugs for many hours in order to continue with my textile business. They promised to pay me over a million naira” Okoye stated. He hails from Anambra State.

Chukwunyere Prince Emmanuel said that he smuggled drugs to settle his bills. In his words, “I am a business man. I supply teaching materials. Armed robbers attacked me and I lost one of my eyes in the process. As I speak, I owe over 15 million naira. I am unable to pay my rent, my children’s school fees and even feeding. I have no rest of mind because my creditors are on my neck daily. This is my first time of trafficking drugs and I was promised 4,000 euros”.  He hails from Imo State.

Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade expressed concern over the way drug traffickers expose themselves to danger by ingesting poisonous drugs. According to Giade, “it is very worrisome that highly poisonous substances like cocaine, methamphetamine and similar drugs are brazenly ingested by drug suspects. Despite the attendant risk, these suspected drug traffickers could still afford to ingest 233 wraps of narcotics. The Agency will continue to sensitize members of the public on the priceless benefits of a drug-free society”.

COCAINE AIRLINE: NDLEA INVITES ARIK AIR CREW

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has invited the entire crew on Arik Air flight W3101 that left the country for London Heathrow Airport on Monday for questioning. The entire crew member including some support staff that worked on the flight before it departed Lagos are currently before narcotic investigators at the Ikoyi Headquarters of the NDLEA. They include two pilots and members of the cabin crew comprising an Australian and a South African.

The invitation which was made by the Agency was swiftly complied with by the management of Arik Air. The crew members were conveyed to the NDLEA office in an official bus belonging to Arik Air. This is part of ongoing investigation to determine their level of involvement in the smuggling of 20 kg of cocaine found with Chika Egwu Udensi, a member of the cabin crew in London. The latest Range Rover car belonging to the prime suspect parked on the airline’s premises had also been moved to the NDLEA office as exhibit.

Meanwhile, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Ahmadu Giade has promised to carry out elaborate investigation in the on-going case, stressing that all persons involved shall be exposed and prosecuted. The Agency has made remarkable progress in her counter-narcotic efforts and will resist any act capable of reversing the gains so far recorded.

ARIK: NDLEA ARRESTS ACCOMPLICE, INTENSIFY SCREENING OF AIRPORT WORKERS

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended an Arik Air staff, Ikechukwu Chibuzor Oliver over his alleged role in the 20kg of cocaine seizure made by the United Kingdom Border Force at Heathrow Airport. The thirty-five (35) year old who works as a catering loader was found to have subverted airport security by concealing cocaine in catering supplies. Preliminary investigation revealed that both Oliver and Chika had been infiltrated by a suspected drug cartel.
Oliver told narcotic investigators that he was invited into the illicit drug deal by his colleague Chika Egwu Udensi, a senior member of the Arik Air cabin crew that was arrested in London on flight W3101.
“It was Chika that introduced me into the drug deal. Whenever Chika gives me the drug, I will hide it in catering supplies. Chika knows where to collect the drug inside the flight. They pay me four hundred thousand naira (N400,000) per bag. I was expecting 1.2 million naira for the three bags that I smuggled into the aircraft” Oliver stated. He hails from Isialagwa North Local Government Area in Abia State. The graduate of Business Administration was employed by Arik Air in 2009.
NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Ahmadu Giade has directed that henceforth all airport workers must be extensively screened. “The Agency has taken drastic measures to avert infiltration of airport workers by criminal syndicates. Airline officials and airport workers shall be subjected to comprehensive search. The NDLEA will resist any act capable of undermining security at all entry and exit points” Giade stated.
The NDLEA boss stressed that all catering trucks, luggage trucks, aviation fuel tankers, machines and personnel whose duty directly or indirectly relates to the tarmac and flight operations shall be subjected to full screening.
As part of investigation, the rented apartment of Chika at Pastor Ojediran Street Ejigbo, Lagos was searched by operatives of the NDLEA. He lives there with the mother and siblings while his wife and children are based in Canada. The latest Range Rover car belonging to the prime suspect parked on the airline’s premises had also been moved to the NDLEA office as exhibit.
The 20kg of cocaine found with Chika in London was concealed within the construction of laptop bags. The quantity and estimated street value of the cocaine is over N100 million naira.

The Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven Ministries’ women tackle divorce among Christians

Emeka Ibemere
Following the unbridled divorce cases recently ravaging Christians homes in Nigeria, The Glorious Women of The Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven Ministries, located at 2 Falana Street, Killa Bus Stop, Ejigbo, in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, organised their third annual convention, ‘tagged Vessel of Honour’, last weekend in Lagos State as a way of bringing women, especially married ones under the canopy of God.
The event which attracted the women in business, corporate bodies, individual women, career women, those in politics, religious, education, civil service, civil society and academia, hammered on the need for women especially married women to take their marriage and husbands, religiously.
Introducing the programme, the national coordinator of the women who doubled as the host of the event and the wife of the general overseer of ministry, Evangelist Anna Elu

chie, said; “today’s event is the annual women convention and its all about teaching women on how to have good character, appreciate their husbands, how to build capacity training in raising up their kids in Godly ways. It’s also on how to teach women how to build on communication as one of the keys to a successful marriage,” she stated.
“It’s mostly on character and that is why it’s tagged: Vessels of Honour.” According to her, the three days programme has impacted much on the women adding that the result of the event would produce good fruit in no distant time.
“Yes, I think it has impacted much on the women of this ministry because, I can see great changes in their life since they came into the ministry. This is the third convention of the programme. The first one was called the women of impact; the second one is called the women of wisdom and this third one is vessel of honour.” Evangelist Eluchie quipped. “I expect our women to get closer to Jesus this end-time and be an outstanding women anywhere they are; they have to be outstanding in their marriage, business, Christian life, their homes and in raising up their children, they have to be outstanding.”
The Evangelist urged women to always show respect to their husbands, and exhibit good example anywhere they are as good women of honour. She tasked Christian women all over the world to change their attitude and character if their characters are not good.
Mrs. Ijeoma Ekwueme, the women leader of the group while delivering her welcome address, said because of the changing faces of the present world and its challenges that God revealed to them about the topic of this year’s convention as: “Vessel of Honour” adding that vessel of honour is a degree of life a child of God must attend.
“It is a degree that brings one before the presence of the living God. It is a degree one attends after purging himself or herself,” Ekwueme added.
“Any one that is vessel of honour stands and lives the life of Christ, which the foundation is of His kingdom and His principles.”
Speaking further, Mrs. Ekwueme, added that the event was all about training of women on how to cherish their husbands and that was why the inspiration of entitling this year’s convention theme as: vessels of honour came up; “because in our world today, there are so many challenges facing women and you can see divorce everywhere, and we are trying to bring them according to the standard of God.” She explained. “With this programme and the teachings they have been receiving in the last three days; in bring them up to be able to build Christian homes. There are newly married ones among us and because they are young, we are teaching them how to love their husbands and give him his position and honour in their marriages” “When you carry out investigation today, you would discover that divorce cases are among the young and newly married ones. We have to teach them on how to take care of their husbands, their kids and their domestic affairs without resulting into quarrel and eventually divorce.”
According to Ekwueme, lack of God’s knowledge is what is causing divorce today everywhere rather than poverty. She explained that because both men and women are lacking in the knowledge of God they call for divorce at every slight provocation.
“If they know God, they cannot call for divorce because bible said the word of God is God himself; if you know God’s word one should know that in every trials and temptation, you have to be contempt with what God has giving to you,” she stated.
“So, many women are not satisfied with their husbands’ condition because they see their husband as poor man but a good vessels woman will pray for her husband knowing that nobody was born poor and as a woman, what they need do is to encourage their husbands because; behind every successful man, there is a woman.”
Ekwueme counselled women to try and get close to God because He is the foundation of man’s life.
“My advice to women is that they should try and know God because He is our foundation because if you don’t have him, you will fail. We are in the world of flesh and everything is not about the flesh, we should know that God we serve is alive and can do all things,” she added
Women should come under the umbrella of Christ because He is the head of the Church bearing in mind that our husbands are our head. I want women in Nigeria to embrace Christ and the word of God but living a worldly life cannot help but one in Christ cannot be in crises.”
Pastor Eluchie, vision holder and general overseer of The Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven Ministries, said it was a great event when women of the church gathered together to celebrate their quality life in Christ Jesus.
“It’s our women event and a great honour to our women who are celebrating their yearly convention. Its great event in the life of Christian women of this ministry who are daughters of Abraham,” he explained further
“They are celebrating quality life in Christ Jesus because as they tagged their message-“Vessels of Honour” and you know for one to be a vessel of honour, she must have purged herself or disciplined himself or herself in order to earn respect. They invited other women to learn how to respect their husbands, manage their homes and worship God,” Pastor Eluchie advised
“My message to women is that they should have their foundation in Christ Jesus, read the word of God and live a quality and exemplary life as a lamp unto other women to see and emulate. I urge them to continue to uphold Christ and keep on looking unto Christ without fear.”
Sermonising on the Convention’s theme: “Vessels of Honour” Evangelist Anna Ogu, the Guest Minister pointed out five key factors that destroys marriage and asked the women to always pray against them. She called on women to shun constant nagging, learn how to shut up when their husbands are angry, have good character, show respect, be supportive and have self confidence, explaining that without all these in any home such marriages are on their way to wreckage. Evangelist Ogu said beauty is nothing without character. “Let your character be inspiring and motivating. Lack of respect kills marriages and women should know that men are ego conscious. Women should honour their husbands with submission, obedience and love,” Evangelist Ogu said.
She called on women to always ask God to give them spirit of silence when their husbands are angry and talking and that challenging them at that time could spell doom for such a woman. The event was spiced with bible recitations, drama, special songs, opening of bible verses competition and hours of praise songs.

Terrorism: Stakeholders plan to depriving insurgents of funds

 Emeka Ibemere
Since terrorism hits Nigeria like a thunderbolt, through the activities of Boko Haram insurgency in 2009, when the jihadist rebel group started an armed rebellion against the government of Nigeria, many questions have been asked about their sponsors and financial backbones.
Yet, no clue has been given as who their sponsors are, leading to experts suggestions that for such rag-tag army of rebels to have such weapons to fight and overrun an organised national army, there might be heavy funding from terrorist financing, which provides funds for terrorist activities.
According to experts, terrorist funding may involve funds raised from legitimate sources, such as personal donations and profits from businesses and charitable organizations, as well as from criminal sources, such as the drug trade, the smuggling of weapons and other goods, fraud, kidnapping and extortion.
Money launderers are used to evade authorities' attention and to protect the identity of their sponsors and of the ultimate beneficiaries of the funds. However, financial transactions associated with terrorist financing tend to be in smaller amounts than is the case with money laundering, and when terrorists raise funds from legitimate sources, the detection and tracking of these funds becomes more difficult.
It was gathered that to move their funds, terrorists use the formal banking system, informal value-transfer systems, Hawalas and Hundis and, the oldest method of asset-transfer, the physical transportation of cash, gold and other valuables through smuggling routes.
FINTRAC's analysts are finding that in their disclosures to date, funds suspected of being used for terrorist activities financing are moved out of Africa through traditional banking centers to countries with major financial hubs, in what is likely an effort to conceal their final destination.
However, financial intelligence is said to be used to assist money laundering and terrorist financing investigations in the context of a wider variety of criminal investigations, where the origins of the suspected criminal proceeds are linked to drug trafficking, fraud, tax evasion, corruption, and other criminal offences.
Terrorist financing topped the agenda of the five-day inter-agency training programme on, Cross Border Financial Investigation organized by the United States Department of Homeland Security, for officers of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF; Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS; Nigeria Customs Service, NCS; National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and the EFCC, last week in Abuja.
During the opening ceremony of what seems to be all stakeholders forum on the issue, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde, advocated improved financial intelligence gathering by the anti-graft agency and other law enforcement agencies in the country to check flow of illicit funds, if the war on terror must be won.
“A reputable strategy to fight insurgency is to deprive the insurgents of funds, because there is no dispute that illicit funds movement across borders fuels organized crimes, including terror attacks and insurgency in Nigeria,” Lamorde said.
According to him, “There is an urgent need to strengthen our financial intelligence architecture to enable us effectively monitor cash trails and check illicit cash flow to organized criminal gangs.”
Lamorde stressed that it was of great concern that “up till now, the major concern in the fight against insurgency is on how the insurgents fund their operations within the sub-region.” He said.
“While tremendous progress has been recorded in strengthening the Anti-Money Laundering Regulations and the Compliance Regime in Nigeria, monitoring the movement of cash outside the financial sector, remains a major challenge, because of Nigeria’s predominantly cash-based economy”.
The EFCC boss Chairman, also applauded the commitment of the United States government in assisting Nigeria surmount its contemporary challenges through institutional development.
“It is gratifying that this programme is coming a few weeks after the historic visit of President Muhammadu Buhari, to the United State, where he and President Barack Obama pledged to deepen the cooperation and friendship between our two countries”.
Lamorde who said he had always considered the United States as a dependable ally in the fight against economic crimes and corruption in Nigeria, explained that the record of partnership between the EFCC and major US institutions, such as the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, United States Postal Inspection Service, United States Secret Service, among others, bears testimony to this.
He said the EFCC has benefitted from several training programmes organized by US agencies in Nigeria, Ghana, Malta, Botswana and the United States. He however described the impact of such exposure on the operations of the Commission as invaluable.
Lamorde who said the focus of the training programme, Cross Border Financial Investigation, is most timely considering the challenges that that confront Nigeria and her neighbours in the areas of money laundering and terrorist financing said, it has become imperative to strengthen our financial intelligence architecture to be able to monitor cash trails and check illicit cash flow to organized criminal gangs.
He said while tremendous progress has been recorded in strengthening the anti money laundering regulation and compliance regime in Nigeria, monitoring the movement of cash outside the financial sector, remains a major challenge, considering that Nigeria is still predominantly a cash-based economy.
His solace is however in the fact that the EFCC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have in the last few years taken very bold steps to check illicit movement of cash across our borders; where operatives stationed at major international airports across the country have intercepted millions of dollars in cash, which were not declared to customs by their owners.

This measure, he recalls, said accounted for the significant drop in currency outflow outside Nigeria in 2013, as currency declaration dropped from Nine billion, nine hundred and twenty six million, seven hundred and thirty nine thousand, six hundred and forty eight dollars ($9,926,739,648.00) to one billion, three hundred and twenty four million, forty five thousand, six hundred and seventeen dollars ($1,324,045,617.00). There was a further drop in 2014 as currency outflows recorded an all- time low of $807,585,061.70.
Deputy Chief of Mission, United State Embassy, Maria Brewer said that the training programme will expose participants to new trends and techniques in combating economic and financial crimes.
“Since economic and financial crimes is a global phenomenon, the training will focus among others, on taking away proceed of crime, because when you take away the money, you take away why people do crime”, she said.
Other dignitaries at the opening ceremony included, Benjamin Bryan, acting director, International Narcotics and Law Enforcement US Mission Abuja; Steve Robinson, Attaché, Department of Homeland Security Investigation, DHSI; T. A. Hundeyin, Deputy Comptroller General of Immigration, who represented the NIS boss, and Alhaji Hamisa Lawal, Commander of Narcotics, who represented the NDLEA boss.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the donation of a high-tech counting machine to the EFCC. Brewer, who made the presentation on behalf of the US government, said that it was one way, in which the President Barack Obama-led administration, planned to assist the EFCC and the country at large in fighting corruption.
It would be recalled that since 2009, when the goons started, their uprising it started peacefully during the first seven years of its existence as local vigilante but changed in 2009 when the Nigerian government launched an investigation into the group's activities following reports that its members were arming themselves.
When the government decided to wade into action, they arrested several members of the group in Bauchi, which sparked clashes with Nigerian security forces leading to the deaths of an estimated 700 people. During the fighting with the security forces Boko Haram fighters reportedly "used fuel-laden motorcycles" and "bows with poison arrows" to attack a police station.
The group's founder and then leader Mohammed Yusuf was also killed during this time while still in police custody. After Yusuf's killing, Abubakar Shekau became the leader and still holds the position as of January 2015, when his controversial death was announced.
After the killing of M. Yusuf, the group carried out its first terrorist attack in Borno in January 2010. It resulted in the killing of four people. Since then, the violence has only escalated in terms of both frequency and intensity. In September 2010, a Bauchi prison break freed more than 700 Boko Haram militants, replenishing their force.
On 29 May 2011, a few hours after Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as president, several bombings purportedly by Boko Haram killed 15 and injured 55. On 16 June, Boko Haram claimed to have conducted the Abuja police headquarters bombing, the first known suicide attack in Nigeria. Two months later the United Nations building in Abuja was bombed, signifying the first time that Boko Haram attacked an international organisation.
In December, it carried out attacks in Damaturu killing over a hundred people, subsequently clashing with security forces in December, resulting in at least 68 deaths. Two days later on Christmas Day, Boko Haram attacked several Christian churches with bomb blasts and shootings. Till date, the gang has not relented in their attacks on the soul of the nation.

How ban on poultry products increased smuggling activities

Emeka Ibemere
In recent times, the activities of smugglers have increased, geometrically compared to some years ago, when there were no restrictions on the importation of poultry products in Nigeria.
Even as stakeholders in local farming and agricultural products are falling on themselves to commend the Nigeria activities of the Nigeria Customs Service on her onslaughts against smuggling of frozen poultry products’ ban.
However, the ban on the poultry products is the current cause of the increased smuggling syndicates operating on Nigeria-Benin Republic routes, Kaduna- Jibya axis, and including the unofficial routes.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), recently warned against the consumption of imported or smuggled frozen poultry and meat, threatening to take action should any smugglers or dealers be found with the banned products.
NAFDAC Director General, Dr Paul Orhii, supported his warning on a study he claimed that was carried out by experts from University of Ibadan.
The imported poultry products, of chicken and turkey have been alleged to have been identified as causative agents in non- communicable diseases (NCDs) and antibiotics resistance. Some of these health conditions were included to hypertension, kidney disease, and cancer.
Despite the strong warnings, the illegal smuggling of these products have increased more than before, because the products are now costly and smugglers are smiling to the banks.
The reason according to our investigation is that the products locally produced in Nigeria are not meeting up the desired demands of the local consumers.
According to the president of the Poultry Association of Nigeria Dr Ayoola Odutan while the local demand for frozen chicken is above two million metric tonnes annually, Nigerian farmers are only able to produce 300,000 metric tonnes, leaving a wide gap of more than 1.7 million metric tonne. “Out of this figure, smuggled chicken accounts for 1.2 million metric tonnes annually.”
Dr Orhii explained that the continuous consumption of imported chicken and turkey could damage the human system on the long run, unlike poultry foods produced locally, which have been found safer for consumption.
Nigeria Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has commended the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on its battles, particularly the commitment to their cause, noting that genuine hope has now been restored to their business.
Our sources in NCS said daring poultry smugglers have now relocated to the North, in a bid to escape the onslaught in the South and South-west axis of the country.
Recently NCS launched operation ‘Hawk Descend’s which is on its fifth week and the effort has resulted in seizures of 13,960 cartons of frozen poultry, with a Duty Paid Value DPV of over N45m.
“The leadership of the Poultry Association Farmers appreciates the excellent performance through various acts of onslaught, arrests and confiscation of smuggled poultry products into the Country. This is very unprecedented, as we can boldly say that operation “Hawk Descend” is a highly successful exercise,” the group stated in their recent commendation to NCS.
Meanwhile, the Customs Service said they ended its fifth week of operations by recording seizures worth N45, 470,441, while posting a highest Duty Paid Value (DPV) since the launch of the operation last month.
A breakdown of the seizures showed that the Ogun Command impounded 6, 565 cartons with a DPV of N2,937,441.00; the FOU Zone A recorded 1,395 cartons, with a DPV  of N7,533,000.; the. FOU B (Kaduna) confiscated 6,000, with DPV of N 35,000,000; was totalling 13,960 cartons, with a DPV of N 45,470,441.
In his assessment of the seizure, the resigned Comptroller-General of Customs, (CGC), and Dikko Inde Abdullahi stated that smugglers of poultry products are now exploring routes in the Northern and Eastern parts of the Country, as the Special Operation had made life difficult for them in the South-Western flank.

He commended the Federal Operations Units in Lagos and Kaduna for their huge seizures, and put other Commands on alert, noting that the FOU Operatives in Kaduna actually apprehended two trucks conveying smuggled poultry products at Gidan Wali, along Babana border in Niger State.
Nigerian’s Customs recently signed a bilateral agreement with the Customs Administration of Benin Republic to synergize and share intelligence to boost operations along the borders.
To actualise this agreement, the Nigeria Customs Service remarkably supported Benin Customs Administration with a donation of five brand new pick-up Double Cabin Vehicles.
The outgoing Comptroller General, Dr. Dikko Inde Abdullahi enjoined Nigerians, particularly the Poultry Association of Nigeria to support the Nigeria Customs Service with relevant information in respect of frozen poultry smuggling, stressing that the war against illicit trade must be fought by everyone.
Dikko while disclosing that the Nigeria Customs Service NCS onslaught against poultry smuggling code-named “Hawk Descend” has hit N28, 660,717 in the third week of its war.
“Please give useful information and other forms of assistance that will further help the operatives to achieve the goal of completely crippling poultry smuggling into Nigeria”, he pleaded.

It was learnt the seizures consisted of 5,915 cartons of frozen poultry product, mostly conveyed in commercial vehicles, which was confiscated by Officers around the South Western area of the country which consist of Badagry Creeks, Seme axis and Idiroko axis of Ogun state.
The breakdown of the seizures: showed that the Ogun Command recorded 2,800 cartons; the Federal Operations Unit FOU impounded 2,561 cartons; the Western Marine 455 cartons, while Seme Command confiscated 99 cartons; bringing the entire seizures to a total of 5,915 cartons.
The Comptroller-General praised the efforts of the operatives, while asking the smugglers to discontinue from smuggling the prohibited products which has resulted in heavy capital losses, adding that the present government was resolute in containing their menace, as a result of the negative consequences on the economy of the nation.
Last week, the Head of Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone “C”, an anti-smuggling unit in Owerri, Comptroller Dimka, and Victor David warned that engaging in the smuggling of the contraband products may soon become the smoothest route to jail.
He gave the warning, while announcing that his command arrested 30 suspected smugglers in July, out of which, not fewer than 20 had been dragged to court, as officers and men of the command recorded a total of 48 seizures, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of  N197,385,747.00.
Dimka Victor, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) also thanked members of the public for their “boldly and courageously”  effort in availing the command of relevant information, noting that with their support, his jurisdiction, particularly the Benin/Asaba express way, Owerri/Port-Harcourt Road and Enugu axis where the seizures occurred have become smugglers dead-ends.
“In addition to the 48 seizures made last month, an under-payment of N24,246,213.00 was also recovered”, he stated, providing a breakdown  which showed 69 bales of second hand clothing, 39 vehicles, 139 pieces of used tyres, 244 pairs of used foot wears and 60 bags of 50kg rice
“The NCS will never succumb to senseless and irrational pleadings for leniency and pardon by individuals caught in the act of smuggling,” he warned.
According to him, such consideration would amount to compromising the statutory responsibilities of the Establishment.
