The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Wednesday restated its commitment to protecting the environment in line with global best practices in Health, Safety, and the Environment, HSE.
Speaking
to journalists at an event organized by the HSE Department of the Corporation
to mark the 2013 World Environment Day in Abuja, the Group Managing Director of
the NNPC, Engr. Andrew Yakubu, stated that as an institution with interest in
the future, the Corporation has a responsibility to ensure that the environment
is not only safe for current operations but good for habitation for generations
unborn.
“In NNPC
we recently got the prize for the best HSE Compliant Corporation in Sub-Saharan
Africa during a recent industry event in Ghana. This shows clearly that our
effort in ensuring that the principles of HSE are properly enshrined and
imbibed in our lifestyles, our work place and also in carrying out our business
is yielding results,” he said.
On the
Corporation’s efforts in curbing pollution, the GMD noted that though the
operations of oil and gas business naturally cause pollution the Corporation
has over time made HSE a vital component of its activities to curb the
incidents of pollution.
“HSE has
become a culture in NNPC; it is part of us because we cannot afford the cost of
not doing that. We place a lot of premium in our environment. We pollute our
environment but also have means of ensuring remediation to restore the
environment back to the way we found it,” the GMD stated.
Commenting
on the theme of this year’s World Environment Day dubbed: Think, Eat, Save, the
GMD noted that the topic is in alignment with the Corporation’s aspirations of
adding value by generating linkages between the oil and gas industry and
agriculture.
“Oil and
gas operations impact on the environment in one way or the other, therefore
striking a balance between exploitation of natural resources and preservation
of the environment has been agreed globally as the way to go,” he said.
Engr.
Yakubu noted that though the NNPC is not a food producing or processing company
it has since put in place a Policy that addresses catering issues including
waste of food, its preservation and general management among other objectives.
“I
therefore call upon each and every staff of the Corporation to avoid waste of
food in our homes and other places. As we try to burn off what we consume by
regular exercises, we are also reducing man-hour loss, improving healthy work
force which improves our efficiencies and maximizes return on investment,” he
stated.
The
climax of the event was the planting of a tree at the NNPC Towers by the GMD.
