PRESS RELEASE
The Chairman/Chief Executive of the National
Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade has charged Assistant Commanders
on scientific ways to dislodge drug cartels in the country. Giade said that the
summit is expected to build capacity of Assistant Commanders for effective
service delivery in preparation for the onerous task ahead of them. The theme
of the retreat holding in Kaduna is Transforming NDLEA to Meet with
Contemporary Challenges in Drug Control in Nigeria.
“Drug cartels are becoming more
sophisticated in their operations and we must incapacitate them. Modes of drug
concealment are changing from time to time. Cannabis cultivation has spread to
every part of the country. It is disturbing that clandestine laboratories for
the production of methamphetamine have been discovered in Nigeria. The
increasing spread of violence in some parts of the country has led to loss of
lives, damage to property and rising number of displaced persons. These glaring
threats to our national security demands that we adopt scientific drug control
strategies” Giade stated.
“The transformation of the NDLEA is a
collective task and all parties must appreciate their roles and take
responsibility. In the absence of the commander, the assistant takes charge of
the command. This clearly underscores their importance in the administrative
hierarchy of the Agency. It is therefore pertinent for them to come together
under a suitable platform to share experiences and acquire more managerial
skills” Giade stated.
The NDLEA boss also called on the
Assistant Commanders to take absolute advantage of the opportunities offered by
the week long retreat to fine tune their trade craft. In his words, “Drug
cartels always seek new ways to circumvent legislation and if we must continue
to stop them a retreat is inevitable. I implore you to identify innovative and
strategic ways of getting a task done. We must continue to brainstorm on the
latest methods and trends in drug trafficking and money laundering. At the end
of this summit you are expected to return as ambassadors of change for the
Agency. The management of the Agency is championing a comprehensive drug
control plan for the country and is prepared to make the needed sacrifices for
a drug-free Nigeria”.
