The
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday May 13, 2013 arraigned a
businesswoman, Nneoma Amaechi before Justice K.O Nwosu of the Abia State High
Court, Umuahia on a 4-count charge of fraudulent conversion and stealing.
The
accused person who is managing director of Dazzle Ventures allegedly defrauded
one Engr. Owen Nwokolo in a N13m contract to construct 6-Room office block for
the Abia State Ministry of Rural and Urban Development
Mrs.
Amaechi was allegedly awarded the contract by the office of the Executive
Governor of Abia State but sold the said contract to Nwokolo for a fee of four
million naira. Thereafter, he gave Nwokolo the power of attorney
‘to do all acts, collect all money paid by the Government of Abia State or to
be paid in respect of the said construction”.
However,
having taken the building to the roofing level, Nwokolo requested for payment
of N9,000,000.00 (nine million naira) from the ministry in order to
complete the contract only to discover that Mrs. Amaechi had collected the
money. Amaechi allegedly collected four cheques totalling N8, 057, 400.00
(eight million, fifty seven thousand, and four hundred naira) and did not
give a dime to Mr. Nwokolo.
When
the charge was read to the accused, she pleaded not guilty.
One
of the charges read, “that you Nneoma Amaechi, being the managing
director of Dazzle ventures, on 11th November 20110 at Umuahia, in
Umuahia judicial division of the High court of Abia state, stole the sum of
N3,057,400.00 (three million, fifty seven thousand, four hundred naira,
being money belonging to Owen Nnaemeka Nwokolo, the Managing Director and Chief
Executive of OwenPeters Scientific Instruments Limited by fraudulently
converting the said money to your own use”.
The
case has been adjourned to Monday May 20, 2013 for hearing on the bail
application
