The Economic and
Financial Crimes commission today being Monday November 17, 2014 arraigned one
Tope Ajayi Samuel and his company Sky TV Global Media Limited before Justice
Fatu Riman of the Federal High Court Kano on a three count charge bordering of
Conspiracy and Intellectual theft
The accused was
arrested by the EFCC Operatives on 23rd August 2013 at Link 26 Bawo
Road, Hausawa quarters in kano, following a written complaint to the Commission
by Multi Choice Nigeria Limited that some unidentified individuals engage in
the act of importation, selling and distribution of illicit devices capable of
illegally accessing Multi Choice broadcast signals to unsuspecting members of
the public. He also alleged that he set up contrivances or equipment that act
as gateways which facilitates illegal access by the non Multi Choice devices to
DSTV broadcast signals which indicate that the activities of this pirate
amounts to a violation of the intellectual property/copyright held by Multi
Choice Nigeria Limited in the DSTV broadcast signals.
One of the
charge read “That you, TOPE SAMUEL AJAYI and SKY TV GLOBAL MEDIA LIMITED on or
about 23rd August, 2013 within the jurisdiction of the Federal High
Court of Nigeria, Kano Judicial Division illegally had in your possession
Tlink, Stron , Dream, Lumin digital Satellite Receiver, Dlink Satellite
Receivers, AZSKY dongles with routers and mini receiver, Monitors, inverters,
Hp laptops, printer, SIM cards, DSTV cards, Canal cards which you use for accessing Multi Choice
Nigeria Limited (MCN) signal and you thereby committed an offence contrary to
and punishable under section 20 (1)(c) of the copyright Act, Cap C28 Laws of
the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”
The accused
pleaded not guilty to all the three charge when it was read to him. The
prosecution counsel Barrister A.U Ringim asked the court to fix a date for
trial.
Justice Fatu
Riman granted bail to the accused person in the sum of N50 million and two
sureties in the like sum with landed properties of C of O. The case was adjourned to 12th
December, 2015 for trial.
